URSL Surgery for Ureter Stones

What is URSL?

URSL (Ureteroscopic Lithotripsy) is a minimally invasive procedure used to remove stones from the ureter, the tube that carries urine from the kidney to the bladder. During this treatment, a thin, flexible instrument called a ureteroscope is passed through the urinary passage to reach the stone. Once located, the stone is broken into tiny fragments using laser technology and either removed or allowed to pass naturally through urine.

URSL is widely used because it requires no external cuts, causes minimal discomfort, and offers faster recovery compared to traditional surgeries.

Who May Need URSL?

URSL is usually recommended for patients who have:

  • Ureter stones that are stuck and causing severe pain or blockage

  • Kidney stones that have moved into the ureter

  • Stones that do not respond to medications or shockwave therapy (ESWL)

  • Repeated urinary infections or bleeding due to stones

Common Symptoms of Ureter Stones

Patients with ureter stones may experience symptoms such as:

  • Intense pain in the side, back, or lower abdomen

  • Burning or discomfort while urinating

  • Frequent urge to urinate

  • Blood in urine (hematuria)

  • Difficulty passing urine or reduced urine flow

  • Fever or chills caused by infection

If these symptoms persist, medical evaluation and possible URSL treatment may be necessary.

URSL Stone Treatment Process

Accurate Diagnosis

Before treatment, doctors perform imaging tests such as CT scans, ultrasound, or X-rays to identify the size, position, and number of stones.

Minimally Invasive Procedure

A thin ureteroscope is gently inserted through the urethra, bladder, and ureter to reach the stone. This approach avoids any external cuts on the body.

Laser Stone Fragmentation

Once the stone is located, laser lithotripsy is used to break the stone into smaller pieces. These fragments are either removed immediately or passed naturally through urine.

Quick Recovery

URSL is usually a day-care procedure, meaning most patients can return home the same day or within 24 hours. Normal daily activities can typically be resumed within 1–2 days.

Preventing Future Stones

After treatment, doctors may recommend dietary adjustments, hydration tips, and stone analysis to help reduce the chances of future stone formation.

Advantages of URSL

  • No surgical cuts or stitches

  • Minimal pain and faster healing

  • Short hospital stay

  • Highly effective for ureter stones

  • Quick return to normal activities

When Should You See a Urologist?

You should consult a urologist if:

  • A ureter stone is causing persistent pain

  • Stones do not pass naturally despite medication

  • There is infection, urine blockage, or kidney swelling

  • You want fast and effective relief from stone-related pain

Early treatment can prevent complications and protect kidney health.

What Happens During URSL Surgery?

Before the Procedure

  • Blood tests, urine tests, and imaging scans are performed.

Duration of Surgery

  • The procedure usually takes 30 to 60 minutes.

Anesthesia

  • It is performed under spinal or general anesthesia to ensure patient comfort.

Hospital Stay

  • Most cases require same-day discharge or one day of observation.

Recovery

  • Mild burning during urination or increased frequency of urination may occur for 1–2 days.

Stent Placement

  • In some cases, a temporary ureteral stent may be placed for about 1–2 weeks to help urine flow smoothly and support healing.
