RIRS – Advanced Treatment for Kidney Stones
Kidney stones are one of the most common problems affecting the urinary system. While smaller stones may pass naturally through urine, larger stones can cause severe pain and may require medical treatment. Retrograde Intrarenal Surgery (RIRS) is a modern, minimally invasive procedure that allows doctors to remove kidney stones safely and effectively without making any external cuts.
What is RIRS?
RIRS (Retrograde Intrarenal Surgery) is a specialised endoscopic procedure used to treat kidney stones inside the kidney. In this technique, a thin and flexible instrument called a ureteroscope is passed through the natural urinary pathway — the urethra, bladder, and ureter — to reach the kidney.
Using this scope, the surgeon can directly see the stone and treat it without any surgical incision. Because the procedure uses the body’s natural passage, it is considered less painful and allows quicker recovery compared to traditional surgeries.
When is RIRS Needed?
Doctors may recommend RIRS in situations such as:
Kidney stones up to about 2 cm in size
Stones located in areas that are difficult to reach
When shock wave treatment (ESWL) does not work
Patients with bleeding disorders
Individuals with obesity or complex kidney anatomy
How the Procedure is Done
The RIRS procedure is usually performed under general anaesthesia so the patient remains comfortable throughout the surgery.
First, the surgeon carefully passes a flexible ureteroscope through the urethra and bladder into the ureter and finally reaches the kidney. A high-definition camera attached to the instrument helps the surgeon locate the stone clearly.
Once the stone is identified, a laser (commonly Holmium laser) is used to break it into very small pieces. These fragments are either removed using a special basket or allowed to pass naturally through urine. In some cases, a temporary stent is placed in the ureter to help maintain urine flow and allow proper healing.
Benefits of RIRS
RIRS has several advantages compared to traditional stone surgeries:
No external incision or stitches
Less pain and minimal bleeding
Short hospital stay, often less than a day
Faster recovery and early return to daily activities
Effective treatment even for difficult stone locations
Suitable for high-risk patients
Possible Side Effects
Although RIRS is considered very safe, some temporary side effects may occur, including:
Mild burning sensation during urination
Slight blood in urine
Urinary tract infection
Rarely, irritation or injury to the ureter
These issues are usually temporary and can be managed with medications.
Recovery After RIRS
Recovery after RIRS is generally quick. Patients are usually advised to:
Drink plenty of water to flush out stone fragments
Take prescribed medications as advised by the doctor
Avoid heavy physical activity for about a week
Attend follow-up visits for stent removal if placed
Preventing Kidney Stones
To reduce the chances of kidney stones returning, it is important to follow some preventive measures:
Drink 2–3 litres of water daily
Reduce salt intake
Limit foods high in oxalates such as spinach and nuts
Maintain a balanced diet
Treat underlying conditions like urinary infections or gout
Final Words
RIRS has become a highly effective and minimally invasive solution for kidney stone treatment. With modern technology and skilled surgical techniques, patients can experience safe stone removal, minimal discomfort, and faster recovery.
Consulting a qualified urologist will help determine the most appropriate treatment and ensure the best outcome for kidney stone management.
